Former national Under-17 striker Jason Wright flourished, as he netted a four-timer to guide preseason favourites Wolmer’s to an effortless 15-0 victory over St Andrew College in their Group F ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup match at the Bell Chung Oval yesterday.
Wright netted his goals for the Ludlow Bernard-coached Wolmer’s in the 10th, 17th, 22nd, and 38th minutes, to push his tally of goals to eight for the season.
Wright received support from national senior representative Jorginho James, who notched a hat-trick, and Lorenzo Osbourne, who netted a double.
James, who made to the switch from Kingston College to Wolmer’s at the start of the season, scored his goals in the 13th, 47th and 76th minutes.
Osbourne scored his goals in the 71st and 82nd minutes. Demar Rose (11th), Jaheel Hyde (55th) Jason Greenland (69th), substitutes Kenardo Lloyd (58th), Kamario Osbourne (90th) and own goal (28th) were the other scorers for Wolmer’s.
Wolmer’s, who were a semi-finalist last year, led 7-0 at half-time, as the prolific Wright netted all his goals in the first half for his team.
The win for the Heroes Circle-based school represents the biggest margin of victory in the competition this season, surpassing Charlie Smith’s total of 14 goals against Meadowbrook on Tuesday.
Bernard said he hopes his team’s emphatic victory will send a strong warning to their rivals, that they will be very serious contender for the title.
Team’s capacity
“I think this victory sends a signal, but it just depends on how our opposition interpret it,” said Bernard.
“We are doing what we have to do because we know the capacity of the team, and all I want for them to do is to play to their full potential all the times,” he said.
Continuing, Bernard said: “It is a good win and it is good to know that we are scoring goals, and it good to know that a lot of the players can score, because we had about five or six different goalscorers today.”
Berry Forbes, coach of St Andrew College, said: “My players don’t want to train because throughout the entire summer we did not train.”
Forbes added: “My team is not ready and there was some disciplinary action which was taken against some our players, and that also affected our performance.”
